Aleix Espargaro switched to professional cycling after he retired from MotoGP.
Espargaro, who had three victories in MotoGP, will join the Lidl-Trek professional cycling team at the start of 2025.
A cycling enthusiast for nearly a decade, Espargaro turned to the sport after a back injury forced him to stop running. Since then, cycling has become his preferred method of training and maintaining fitness.
As part of Lidl-Trek, Espargaro will serve as an ambassador and participate in some of the most prestigious events on the calendar, according to the team.
The former Aprilia rider ended his career this year, finishing 11th in the overall rider standings.
"I chose to step away from MotoGP earlier than planned to pursue an opportunity that perfectly aligns with my passion," Espargaro said. "I'm incredibly thankful to Lidl-Trek for welcoming me into their family and for their support. I’ll give this new chapter my all. Living in Andorra, I’ve had the chance to build friendships with many pro cyclists, which motivated me to elevate my training."
Espargaro’s career saw 255 starts, the second most in history behind Valentino Rossi. In addition to his cycling role, Espargaro will continue his involvement in MotoGP, working as Honda’s test rider.
Lidl-Trek manager Luca Guercilena praised the move, saying, "Working with Aleix will be incredibly rewarding for us, especially for our young riders. While he’s a passionate and talented cyclist, his experiences and insights from elite competition will offer invaluable guidance to our team, helping younger athletes handle the pressures of top-level sport."
