Yuki Tsunoda will drive Red Bull’s championship-winning RB19 from the 2023 season in a private test at Silverstone this week.
Yuki Tsunoda is set to receive a significant opportunity in his early days as a Red Bull Racing driver, with a private test of the team’s dominant 2023 car, the RB19, scheduled at Silverstone.
The test falls under Red Bull’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme and aims to help accelerate Tsunoda’s adaptation to the team, following his sudden mid-season promotion from Racing Bulls.
The Japanese driver was brought in to replace Liam Lawson, who struggled to meet expectations, but Tsunoda himself has had limited time to acclimate, having joined the Milton Keynes-based squad just a week before the Japanese Grand Prix.
Despite the rushed transition, Tsunoda has already outperformed Lawson statistically, reaching Q3 twice in his first three appearances and scoring points in Bahrain. However, the challenge of mastering the RB21, a car plagued by ongoing balance issues, has been steep.
Red Bull appears keen to support his development, with the Silverstone test offering a controlled environment to better understand the team’s driving philosophies and car setup approaches. Testing the RB19,the car that dominated the 2023 season with 21 wins out of 22 race, will provide Tsunoda with invaluable feedback on Red Bull’s design principles in a more stable and successful package.
Sources suggest that this TPC test was part of Tsunoda’s agreement when signing with Red Bull, and it follows a similar session granted to Lawson earlier this year in Jerez.
