After the announcement of both of Sauber’s current drivers at the end of 2024, the team confirms a rising star Gabriel Bortoleto to join the team in 2025 on a multi-year deal.
Following the announcement of Valtteri Bottas’ and Zhou Guanyu’s departure, Gabriel Bortoleto has officially been confirmed to drive for Sauber in the 2025 season, marking a new chapter in the young Brazilian’s career and completing an all-new lineup for the team.
With two rounds remaining in the F2 championship, Bortoleto currently holds the lead and has impressed with his consistency and talent, earning this opportunity under the guidance of new team’s boss Mattia Binotto.
The 20-year-old, a member of the McLaren Driver Development Programme and managed by Fernando Alonso’s A14 company, has showcased promising potential throughout his F2 season with Invicta Racing, claiming two victories and three additional podiums.
His performance has earned him recognition as a rising talent, and his new F1 seat will make him the first full-time Brazilian driver in the series since Felipe Massa in 2017.
Bortoleto will race alongside Hulkenberg as the team prepares for its transition to Audi in 2026, coinciding with the introduction of new technical regulations.
He now becomes the fourth rookie on the 2025 grid, joining Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, Alpine's Jack Doohan, and Haas' Ollie Bearman.
Bortoleto said: “This is one of the most exciting projects in motorsport, if not in all of sports.
“Joining a team that combines the rich motorsport history of Sauber and Audi is a true honour. Beyond simply being a member, I aim to grow with this ambitious project and reach the pinnacle of motorsport.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity given to me by the team and for the chance to work alongside an experienced driver like Nico.
“Both programs have a proven track record of nurturing young talent, and I am confident that together, we will write our own success story.”
This move also marks the end of Bortoleto’s affiliation with McLaren’s driver program, with the British team releasing a statement confirming his exit to focus on this significant career opportunity.
All the best for the future, @gabortoleto85. 🧡
