TRACK OVERVIEW

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, nestled in the picturesque Ardennes Forest of Belgium, is one of Formula 1’s most iconic venues. Renowned for its historic significance, challenging layout, and unpredictable weather, the circuit has been a mainstay on the F1 calendar since its debut in 1950. The current track configuration, measuring 7.004 km (4.352 miles), is the longest on the calendar and continues to challenge drivers with its high-speed corners and elevation changes.

  • Race distance: 44 laps (total distance of 308.052 km)
  • Lap record: 1:44.701 by Sergio Perez (2024)
  • Most wins: Michael Schumacher (6)

KEY SECTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT

  • Eau Rouge and Raidillon (Turns 2-4): Perhaps the most famous section of any F1 track, this uphill combination requires precision and bravery, with drivers hitting incredible speeds while navigating the steep incline.
  • Les Combes (Turns 5-7): A prime overtaking spot at the end of the Kemmel Straight, where top speeds meet heavy braking.
  • Pouhon (Turn 10): A fast, sweeping left-hander that tests a car’s aerodynamic grip and driver confidence.
  • Blanchimont (Turns 16-17): One of the fastest corners in Formula 1, leading into the Bus Stop chicane.
  • Bus Stop Chicane (Turns 18-19): The final sequence before the main straight, critical for late-braking overtakes and setting up a strong exit.

BEST GRANDSTANDS FOR SPECTATORS

1. Start/Finish Grandstands (Gold 1 and Gold 9)

  • Positioned along the main straight, these seats offer views of the starting grid, pit stops, and the finish line, making them ideal for fans wanting to catch the race’s most dramatic moments.

2. Eau Rouge Grandstands (Gold 3, Gold 4, Gold 5)

  • Located near the base of Eau Rouge, these stands provide an unparalleled view of cars tackling the legendary uphill sweep.

3. La Souce Grandstands (Silver 1, Silver 2, Gold 2, Gold 7, Source)

  • From here you can see the iconic first corner (La Source) and the cars accelerating down the straight towards Eau Rouge. These seats also offer a good view of the pit exit, allowing you to watch drivers rejoin the track during the race.

4. Pouhon Grandstand (Silver 3)

  • Overlooking the fast and challenging Pouhon corner, these seats showcase the sheer skill required to master high-speed corners.

5. Blanchimont & Bus Stop Grandstands (Gold 6, Gold 11 + General Admission)

  • These stands offer a view of cars navigating the thrilling Blanchimont curve and the critical braking zone of the Bus Stop chicane.

6. General Admission at Kemmel Straight

  • A perfect spot to witness high-speed action and overtaking as cars blast towards Les Combes.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRACK

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is located near the town of Spa, Belgium, about 140 km from Brussels.

  • By car: Accessible via major motorways like the E42. Parking is available but fills up quickly, so early arrival is recommended.
  • By train and shuttle: Trains from major cities like Brussels and Liège connect to Verviers, followed by a shuttle bus to the circuit.
  • By bus: Direct buses operate from nearby towns from where you can get to bigger cities, but expect delays due to race-day traffic.

RACE DAY TIPS

  • Arrive early: Large crowds and traffic mean early arrival is key for smooth entry.
  • Prepare for variable weather: Bring sunscreen, rain gear, and warm clothing to be ready for Spa’s infamous microclimate.
  • Pack food and water: Circuit prices are steep; bringing your own snacks and water is a smart move.
  • Bring a portable charger: Between photos, videos, and navigation, your phone battery won’t last long.
  • Wear ear protection: The roar of F1 engines can be intense, so bring earplugs or headphones, especially for kids.
  • Plan your exit: Traffic after the race is heavy. Consider leaving early or prepare to wait it out.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Spa, Stavelot, Malmedy: The closest few towns to the circuit, offering hotels, guesthouses, and a charming atmosphere. However, these accommodations are highly sought after, so booking early is essential to secure your stay.
  • Liège: A larger city with more accommodation options, located about 45 minutes from the track.
  • Camping: A favorite among fans, with several campsites near the circuit. The lively atmosphere adds to the race weekend experience. We would recommend either GPtents or Easy Camping as they are located only about 10 minutes walk from the circuit, which allows you to avoid traffic during the race weekend. Both campsites also offer hot showers.
