TRACK OVERVIEW

The Baku City Circuit, located in Azerbaijan's capital is definitely one of the best street circuits on the F1 calendar. Since its debut in 2016, the circuit has delivered dramatic and unpredictable races, often influenced by its narrow sections and challenging layout. The track is 6.003 km (3.730 miles) long, making it one of the longest on the F1 calendar, and combines tight corners with one of the longest flat-out sections in motorsport.

  • Race distance: 51 laps (total distance of 306.049 km)
  • Lap record: 1:43.009 by Charles Leclerc (2019)
  • Most wins: Sergio Perez (2 victories in 2021 and 2023)

KEY SECTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT

  • Turns 8-12 (Old city complex): This iconic section weaves through Baku’s historic Old City, featuring tight corners and minimal runoff areas. Precision is critical as the narrowest point on the F1 calendar leaves no room for error.
  • Turn 1: A 90-degree left-hander at the end of the main straight, this corner is a hotspot for overtaking and first-lap drama.
  • Turn 3: Another sharp 90-degree corner, demanding skillful braking and offering additional overtaking opportunities.
  • Turns 16-20: This sequence leads into the circuit’s high-speed section, where drivers prepare for the critical final straight.
  • Main straight: Stretching over 2.2 km, this flat-out section is the longest on the calendar, making it a prime spot for slipstreaming and overtaking at speeds exceeding 350 km/h.

BEST GRANDSTANDS FOR SPECTATORS

  • Absheron Grandstands (A, B, C, D, E): These seats along the start/finish straight give you a front-row view of the race start, pit stops, and the exciting finish. You’ll also get to enjoy the build-up before the race and the celebrations after.
  • Bulvar Grandstands (Turn 20): Located right at the last corner, these stands let you watch drivers prepare for their high-speed exit onto the main straight. It’s a great spot to see the action as they set up for the longest straight on the circuit.
  • Azneft Grandstands (Turn 16): From here, you’ll catch drivers tackling a tricky braking zone before powering into the high-speed section. It’s a thrilling spot to see how they handle one of the more challenging corners.
  • Icheri Sheher Grandstands (Turns 11–13): Nestled in the famous castle section, these stands offer a close-up view of cars navigating the narrow, uphill turns. It’s a stunning location to watch drivers in action surrounded by the city’s historic walls.
  • Zafar Grandstands (Main straight after Turn 20): These seats along the long straight give you a great view of cars speeding at full throttle, especially when DRS is activated. It’s the perfect spot to catch those fast-paced overtakes.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRACK

The Baku City Circuit is centrally located in Baku, making it accessible by various modes of transportation.

  • By metro: Baku's efficient metro system connects key areas of the city. Sahil and Icherisheher stations are within walking distance of the circuit.
  • By bus: Buses operate frequently and stop near the circuit. Expect delays during race weekend.
  • By car: Parking is limited and often restricted near the circuit, so public transport is recommended.

RACE DAY TIPS

  • Arrive early: Security checks and large crowds can cause delays, so plan to arrive several hours before the race.
  • Stay hydrated: The weather in Baku can be warm, so carry water to avoid dehydration.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Lightweight, breathable attire and comfortable shoes are a must for navigating the city.
  • Use ear protection: The sound of engines echoing through the city can be intense; earplugs are essential.
  • Plan your exit: Post-race traffic is heavy, so consider waiting or exploring nearby attractions before heading back.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Baku city center: Close to the circuit, the city center offers a range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget options. Book early to secure your spot.
  • Old city (Icherisheher): Stay amidst the historic charm of Baku, just a short walk from the track.
  • Seaside boulevard area: Enjoy modern hotels with stunning views of the Caspian Sea, conveniently located near the circuit.
  • Budget options: Guesthouses and hostels are available for travelers seeking more affordable stays.
