Valentino Rossi is known as one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time, but did you know that he also tested a Formula 1 car with Ferrari? In today’s #TBT, we look back at the incredible story of how Rossi impressed with his performances on four wheels.

Valentino Rossi is a name that stands out in the world of motorsport. Known as one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time, Rossi has won nine World Championships across different categories in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. These include titles in the 125cc, 250cc, and premier classes, with seven of them in the top category—MotoGP.

But what many fans may not know is that he has also tested a Formula 1 car with Ferrari.

Rossi’s journey into Formula 1 began as a dream. He loved speed and competition, and the thought of driving a Formula 1 car excited him. Ferrari, one of the most famous teams in the sport, gave him this chance. His first test with the team took place in 2004 at the Fiorano Circuit, Ferrari’s private test track in Italy.

During his tests, Rossi impressed the team with his performance. Even though he was new to Formula 1, his lap times were competitive. He showed a natural ability to adapt to the car, which is very different from a MotoGP bike. Ferrari’s engineers praised his focus and talent, and rumors spread that he might one day race in Formula 1.

Over the years, Rossi tested for Ferrari several times. In 2004, he stepped in an F1 car for the very first time at the Fiorano Circuit, the Scuderia's private track in Italy. To everyone's shock, he was just 0.7 seconds slower than Michael Schumacher’s lap time. He was even wearing of the German's spare helmets father than one of his own.

A year after, Rossi tested again at the Mugello Circuit, a track where he had claimed many victories on two wheels, and once more impressed with his performance in a car as well.

In January 2006, he drove at the Valencia Circuit in Spain, where he completed more laps and worked closely with the team over a couple of days. Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa, were also present but were testing different cars, making direct comparisons impossible.

Nonetheless, Rossi still impressed, which led to more speculation about a possible switch to car racing, with many fans excited about the idea of the Italian competing in Formula 1 alongside legends like Schumacher, however, their wish didn't come true.

Two years later, he returned to test with Ferrari at the Catalunya Circuit in Spain. What's particularly interesting is that he set lap times faster than those of then-Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer, further proving his talent behind the wheel.

However, in the end, Rossi decided to stay in motorcycle racing. He felt that his true passion was on two wheels, not four. He continued to race motorcycles and achieved even more success, cementing his legacy as one of the best in the sport.

Although Rossi never joined Formula 1, his tests with Ferrari remain an exciting chapter in his career. They showed his versatility as a racer and his willingness to try new challenges. For fans, it was a reminder of Rossi’s unique ability to inspire and surprise, both on and off the track.
