Takaaki Nakagami has received a grid penalty for Sunday’s Australian Grand Prix, after the rider failed to immediately exit the track when the black and orange flag was shown during the practice session.

The black and orange flag signals that a rider’s motorcycle has mechanical issues that pose a risk to themselves and others, and they must immediately leave the track. The rider is then not allowed to rejoin without official authorization.

Nakagami’s LCR Honda began emitting heavy smoke, and although he moved offline after seeing the flag, he returned to the pits instead of stopping on the track. As a result, the FIM Stewards penalized him with a three-place grid penalty for not respecting the black flag with orange disc by not immediately leaving the track.

However, since Nakagami qualified 21st, just ahead of Lorenzo Savadori, his penalty will only drop him one position on Sunday’s grid.

Nakagami’s penalty follows that of Alex Marquez, who will serve a long-lap penalty on Sunday due to an incident at Motegi.
