Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has suggested that a plan for certain European races to rotate on the F1 calendar has been given a green light.
The Formula 1 calendar is already packed with 24 races, but more and more countries want to host a grand prix, at least at some point in the future.
Since Liberty Media bought Formula 1 in 2017, the sport has grown hugely popular worldwide, and new places are eager to join the schedule.
Madrid is set to host its first race in 2026, and there are talks about a new circuit in South Korea. South Africa, Argentina, and Colombia are also interested in joining.
With so much demand, F1 can’t fit in every new race without making changes. One solution being discussed is to rotate certain races, especially in Europe. This means some events might take place every two years instead of every year, which would also help reduce costs for race organizers. For example, F1 is considering making the Dutch Grand Prix a biennial event, with similar discussions around the Belgian Grand Prix.
F1’s CEO, Stefano Domenicali, has talked about this idea before, but now it seems the plan is closer to becoming real as he recently suggested that some European races may soon start rotating, allowing F1 to add new locations while still keeping important, traditional races on the calendar.
“For '26 and beyond, we will have some news to share very, very soon regarding the possibility, in the mid-term, to rotate some European grands prix, and some other new options coming later. This is something we will clarify in due course,” he said on a Liberty Media investors call.
“It is true we have a large demand of possible new venues that want to come in. Our choice will always be balanced between the right economic benefit we can have as a system, and also to leverage the market where we can see the potential to further grow our business.
“It's something we are managing, and thank God today, we have a quality problem to handle that was not the case just a couple of years ago.”
The current Concorde Agreement, lasting until the end of 2025, allows up to 25 races each F1 season. But for now, Domenicali is satisfied with 24 races.
“We believe that the balance we have in terms of numbers is the right one, so 24 is the balanced number that we feel is right," he added.
“I do believe that all the propositions that are coming on our table is just giving us the possibility to make even better choices for our future.
“So as always, we need to be balanced, knowing that we cannot follow only the pure direct financial proposition, because that is different from region to region, but it's up to us to propose to our stakeholders the right choice.
“I think that we are in a good momentum to make sure that the strategy for the future is even stronger, and that's why we are so confident about the fact that this will help to enhance our platform on the sport, on social and business perspective.”
