Sergio Perez believes he can fight for the win in Las Vegas as the track seems to him similar to Baku City Circuit, where he has done great in the past.
Sergio Perez’s poor form in the 2024 season has put his future with Red Bull under serious pressure. The Mexican hasn’t stood on the podium since the Chinese Grand Prix in April and his struggles have significantly contributed to Red Bull dropping to third in the Constructors’ Championship.
Perez is now pinning his hopes on the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a track he believes could suit him. The circuit features a long 1.2-mile straight and tight, technical corners, which are similar to the layout in Baku, where Perez has done well in the past. Earlier this year in Baku, he even outperformed teammate Max Verstappen before a crash with Carlos Sainz ended his race.
To help him improve, Red Bull has given Perez the same updated floor design used by Verstappen, which has helped fix balance issues. He’s also been working to solve problems with his brake balance that have made him uncomfortable in the car.
"Last year, we were quite strong in the race, so I think we are getting back onto our front foot," said Perez quoted by RacingNews365.
"Baku for example was quite strong, and [this track] has a lot of similarities to Baku, so I do expect us to be definitely in the fight for victory - and that will also be important in the constructors' championship.
"We should be in a much better position than we were in Sao Paulo - but that was a lot stronger than the results showed.
"More in the race, the way you look after the tyre, the way you push the tyre under braking, and it was really difficult to break the DRS from the car behind.
"So probably the best thing was to be in the DRS [of the car ahead], save the tyres and so in that regard, it is a little bit similar to Baku."
At the same time, questions about Perez’s future are growing louder. Red Bull bosses Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have hinted at big decisions after the season, with younger drivers like Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto rumored to be in the mix.
