Sergio Perez shared that he turned down two chances to switch teams as he wants to end his Formula 1 career with Red Bull, despite being under a lot of pressure for underperforming.
The 2024 season has been a tough one for Sergio Perez, with constant questions about his future at Red Bull and Formula 1 overall.
He started the year off strong, landing four podiums in the first five races, making it seem like he was set for a great year after a dominant 2023 campaign for the Milton Keynes-based team.
However, after the Chinese Grand Prix, his performance took a steep drop. Since then, he hasn't returned to the podium and has fallen from second to eighth in the championship and also definitely played a part in Red Bull’s drop to third place in Constructors’.
This decline led to growing worries about the Mexican’s future with Red Bull, and rumors circulated that he might lose his seat, especially after young driver Liam Lawson impressed with his performances as a mid-season replacement for Daniel Ricciardo in Red Bull’s sister team.
Perez, however, made it clear he wasn’t interested in leaving Red Bull for another team as he recently revealed that he had turned down two offers from other teams earlier this season, deciding to stay and fight for his spot.
“I had an opportunity, two opportunities, to change teams,” he said in an interview for GQ.
“When I looked at it, I thought, I really love the challenge I have at Red Bull.
“It’s a massive challenge being Max’s team-mate. It’s a challenge that basically trains you for all of it.
“So I said, I want to spend my last part of my career at the top, at the very top, where the pressure, it’s full-on.
“But ultimately, there is 90 percent of the grid who would have loved to have my career.”
The pressure on Perez is growing more and more every day, with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko also recently confirming that Perez's future with the team will be discussed at the end of the season.
