News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsJust before his home race at the Australian Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri has signed a new multi-year contract extension with McLaren.
The announcement was made on Wednesday morning in Piastri’s home country (Tuesday night in the UK), just ahead of the highly anticipated season opener in Melbourne.
Piastri originally joined McLaren in 2023 after graduating from the Alpine F1 academy. His rookie season saw him claim a Sprint race victory and two podium finishes, earning him an initial contract extension through 2026.
However, following an outstanding second season—where he secured two Grand Prix wins in Hungary and Azerbaijan, made six further podium appearances, and played a pivotal role in McLaren’s first Constructors’ Championship triumph in 26 years—the team has moved to extend his deal even further.
“It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m part of McLaren’s long-term vision,” Piastri said following the announcement.
“The team had the belief in me when we signed in 2022, and the journey we’ve gone on over the past two seasons to help return McLaren to the very top of the sport has been incredible.”
With Piastri’s future now secured, McLaren has solidified its driver lineup, as teammate Lando Norris also signed a long-term extension last year. The team is focused on building on its recent success and continuing its push for more championships.
“There are so many talented and special people working at MTC [McLaren Technology Centre] who have helped me to become a Formula 1 race winner very early in my career,” Piastri continued.
“Therefore, I’m very proud to be continuing to represent this legendary team for many years to come.”
Looking ahead to the new season, Piastri is more motivated than ever. “I’m excited to fight for the big prizes as a McLaren driver, and after last year’s fantastic achievements, it has made me even hungrier to stay at the sharp end,” he added.
