Max Verstappen has indicated that the "next step" in his Formula 1 career will be his last, yet he hasn’t hinted about whether it will be with Red Bull or a different team.
Max Verstappen has cemented his place in Formula 1 history with an extraordinary career that spans 203 race starts and counting. The Dutch driver has achieved remarkable success, winning three world championship titles and securing 61 race victories. His consistency and skill are reflected in his 109 podium finishes, making him one of the most dominant forces in the sport.
Verstappen has a valid contract with Red Bull till the end of 2028 and at that point he should get to the 300 races milestone. However, with that his F1 career might be slowly coming to an end.
When the reigning champion recently reached 200 race starts, he was asked if he is planning to race in Formula 1 for another 200, to the disappointment of many fans, his answer was a straightforward "no."
Lately, there have been speculations about Verstappen possibly leaving Red Bull earlier, although he has consistently denied it. Mercedes, which has expressed interest in him and might have a competitive power unit by 2026, could be an option.
Similarly, Aston Martin may also be in the running. Although they are facing challenges at the moment, the prospect of Honda and Adrian Newey joining their team in the near future makes them an appealing choice.
No matter what decision Verstappen makes, he intends for it to be his final move in Formula 1, stating to Sky Italia: "My next step, if there is one, will be my last.
"That could also mean that I renew my existing contract. Everything is still possible at the moment."
Rumors regarding Verstappen's future have emerged due to reports indicating that specific clauses in his Red Bull contract could allow him to leave the deal before it officially ends in 2028.
When questioned about this, Verstappen responded: "Maybe, maybe not."
"It's also not something I'm thinking about right now because there's so much I want to do better this year, and everything that comes in the future is still a long way off.
"It's not an issue right now," he concluded.
Heading into the last 6 races of the 2024 season, the three-time world champion is currently in the lead of the championship, 52 points ahead of Lando Norris, who will try to steal the fourth consecutive title from him.
