Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has made it clear that the team will not write off the 2025 season to concentrate on the 2026 season, when new rules and regulations will be introduced in F1.
Mercedes has had a season full of ups and downs. The team started the year off struggling, then managed to win a few races before the summer break, but has since lost ground again in the recent races.
For the 2026 season, Formula 1 and FIA will introduce a big rules and regulation changes. As a result, some teams, possibly including Mercedes, might be tempted to shift their focus away from the 2025 season and prioritize a fresh start in 2026.
Even though the team doesn’t want to settle down and get back to the top, which might be possible with immediate focus on the year after, Mercedes is not tempted to write off the 2025 season.
The Team Principal Toto Wolff, has explained that the team has set clear goals of winning every season, leaving no doubt that it will give its all to push forward in 2025.
"This is the crux of the matter every year, and especially if you have such a big regulatory change, are you going to compromise one year or the other?" Wolff told Motorsport.com.
"But I'd like to take it from Niki's [Lauda] motto, when being asked. 'Would you rather win this one or the next one?' And he says, 'Both.'
“Sometimes it is much less complex than one thinks. Probably the transition of people and capability into the 2026 regulations is going to happen a bit earlier than it would under stable regulations, but it's not going to be game-changing.
"Nobody's going to switch the machines off in January, unless you are really nowhere. But there is nothing to gain, because between P10 and P7 doesn't make a difference for us anyway. We are fighting for victories and podiums, and cannot write it off."
As the 2024 season enters its final six races, Mercedes sits in fourth place in the constructor's standings, trailing third-place Ferrari by 112 points and the leading McLaren by 187 points.
