McLaren is requesting the FIA to reevaluate Lando Norris’ five-second penalty from the US Grand Prix, claiming that they have new evidence.

Lando Norris received a penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage over Max Verstappen of Red Bull on Lap 52 of last week’s United States Grand Prix.

The British driver attempted to overtake around the outside of the Red Bull, but Verstappen released the brakes, pushing the McLaren wide into the run-off area.

As they both felt like they were acting within F1's overtaking guidelines, it was a big surprise for Norris to receive a five-second penalty, which ultimately cost him a third-place finish and 3 valuable points for the championship battle with Verstappen.

According to the rules, if a driver’s front axle is beside their opponent’s, they should be given racing room. In this case, both drivers felt like they had a right to that space.

Ultimately, the stewards sided with Verstappen, stating that Norris had overtaken the Dutchman off the track and gained an advantage.

However, nearly a week later at the Mexican Grand Prix, McLaren has submitted a request to review the results from Austin, despite initially stating that they wouldn’t take that step.

The same stewards will meet again to decide if McLaren has provided a new element of evidence, which must be something that wasn’t available to the stewards when they made their original decision.

If the stewards decide that McLaren has met this requirement, they will open the case again and re-evaluate the penalty. If not, the results of the US Grand Prix will remain unchanged.
