Mario Andretti has revealed Sergio Perez is being considered as one of Cadillac’s drivers for the 2026 season.
Cadillac will join Formula 1 in 2026 as the 11th team, which means two new seats will be available on the grid. One of the drivers being linked to the team is Sergio Perez, who left F1 at the end of the 2024 season after a difficult year with Red Bull, where he had trouble getting good performance from the car and was eventually replaced.
The Mexican driver has said he will take up to six months to decide what he wants to do next. However, there are strong rumours that he could return with Cadillac. Mario Andretti, who is on the team’s board of directors, confirmed that Perez is being considered.
“He is an option,” Andretti told the Spanish edition of ESPN.
“It could be an option. Absolutely.” He added: “I wish I could tell you, but this is something we keep secret ourselves because we don’t want to give hope in some areas where maybe it’s not going to happen.”
Cadillac has said from the beginning that it wants one experienced driver and one American in its team. But Andretti admitted that it’s hard to find good American drivers at the moment.
“The second driver, the second seat, will definitely be an experienced driver who might be available,” he said.
“And we all know that the selection in that regard is quite clear. There may be three drivers to choose from. Three drivers, realistically, to choose from. And I’m not going to tell you which ones.”
Even though Perez had a tough time at Red Bull, Cadillac doesn’t seem too worried about that. His replacement, Liam Lawson, had a poor start to the 2025 season and was dropped after only two races.
Andretti even said, “All I can say is that Liam Lawson is making Checo look very, very good.” For now, Perez is taking time to think, but a comeback with Cadillac could still be on the cards.
