Marc Marquez had a successful start at the opening round of the 2025 MotoGP season in Thailand, winning both the Sprint and the main race. His performance was so dominant that it got veteran riders, like 1999 World Champion Alex Criville, comparing him to Max Verstappen’s 2023 Formula 1 season.

Even though it might seem like a simple achievement, it wasn’t. Marquez didn’t just win in Thailand—he did it with intelligence and precision. He led the first six laps before purposely dropping to second place to better manage his front tire pressure. Then, with two laps to go, he reclaimed the lead and secured victory by 1.5 seconds. This strategic move reminded Criville of Verstappen’s 2023 season, where the Dutchman won 19 out of 22 races.

When Criville spoke to Radio Marca, he was clear about his top contender for the championship: “Marc Marquez is clearly the favorite. He looks happy, especially with his brother doing so well and fighting for podiums. But if Pecco Bagnaia wants to challenge for the title, he’ll need to step up because Marc is on another level this season.”

Criville also believes that Marquez’s dominance could turn this season into a one-man show, just like Verstappen did in Formula 1.

Winning both races in Thailand was the perfect start for Marquez if he wants to dominate this season. His brother, Alex Marquez, also had a strong race, finishing second and making it a dream weekend for the Marquez family.

“You can’t ask for a better start,” Criville added. “Marc is in top form—he has the best bike, the best team, and he’s highly motivated. There’s still a long way to go with 21 races left, but if things continue like this, we’re in for an exciting season.”

After years of struggling with injuries and setbacks, Marc Marquez is officially back. And with a perfect start, he just might dominate the 2025 MotoGP season the way Verstappen did in Formula 1.
