News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Marc Marquez set the pace on Day 1 of MotoGP testing in Buriram, leading the field with a 0.465-second gap. Ducati showcased its dominance, while KTM, Aprilia, Yamaha, and Honda fought to close in. Can anyone challenge Márquez on Day 2?
Marc Marquez isn’t holding back in Buriram, as he topped Day 1, being 0.465 seconds faster than the rest of the field. It is his first time leading a test day since Jerez 2020. Following close behind is his younger brother, Alex Marquez. Franco Morbidelli completed the top 3, proving Ducati’s dominance once again.
Ducati is still deciding on its engine for 2025, which is a crucial choice since it will be locked in for 2026 as well. Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez are key riders in this decision, but even with the GP24 engine, they still have an upper hand over the competition. Bagnaia finished eighth on Day 1, slightly off his own lap record here.
Rookie Fermin Aldeguer finished 14th, ahead of another rookie, Ai Ogura, by only 0.080 seconds.
Aprilia had a strong start despite the absence of reigning champion Jorge Martin. Marco Bezzecchi secured fourth place, which was a significant improvement for the team. His teammate for the test is Lorenzo Savadori, who was a good support. Raul Fernandez also returned to action after recovering from injury, putting in solid lap times in the 1:30s.
Pedro Acosta continues to impress in KTM. The rising star finished fifth and even managed to break into the 1:29s. His sprint simulation was strong, showing he might be a serious contender in races. His teammate, Brad Binder, was just outside the 1:29s club in ninth place. Over at Red Bull KTM Tech3, Enea Bastianini and Maverick Viñales were adjusting, finishing 16th and 18th.
Yamaha had a decent start to testing, with their top rider being Jack Miller in 10th place. Alex Rins and Fabio Quartararo followed in 12th and 13th, while Miguel Oliveira finished 17th. However, the big question is: Can Yamaha make more progress on Day 2?
Honda had a great day, with Luca Marini in sixth and Johann Zarco in seventh, both breaking into the 1:29s. That’s a big achievement for Honda, as they managed to set their fastest time ever in Buriram. Joan Mir finished 11th, while rookie Somkiat Chantra continued making steady improvements as he prepares for his MotoGP debut in front of his home crowd.
