Liam Lawson is getting ready for the tough challenges he will face when he takes the wheel of the RB car for the last six rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Following the Singapore Grand Prix, it was announced that Daniel Ricciardo will leave RB with immediate effect, with Liam Lawson taking his place for the remaining 6 races the season.
Last year, Lawson stepped in for Ricciardo during five races after the Australian driver suffered a wrist injury over the Dutch GP weekend. Lawson's impressive performance in those races has led RB to offer him a full-time seat.
Now, the young New Zealander will have the opportunity to secure for himself a full-time seat on the 2025 F1 grid as Red Bull with the sister team RB are ready to observe his progress and future potential.
There is also a chance for Lawson to prove himself worthy of the Red Bull seat and potentially replace Sergio Perez, as the team’s advisor Helmut Marko recently mentioned his interest in having a junior driver alongside Max Verstappen next year.
At the same time, Lawson recognizes the significant challenge ahead of him and understands the importance of showing the best he can do.
“It’s six rounds left of the season, so I’ve come in at a, you know, difficult time,” he told Newstalk ZB.
“It’s going to be a very challenging point. Obviously, all these guys have done three quarters of a season now, so I have to try and compete with that now at tracks that I haven’t done as well."
Last year, he managed to outqualify Max Verstappen, knocking him out in Q2 at the Singapore GP. In the race, the New Zealander finished ninth, earning two points for AlphaTauri (now rebranded as RB).
“I need to perform,” Lawson acknowledges.
“Basically, I need to try and obviously show my worth in F1 and, I would say do a similar job to what I did last year.
“What’s given me the shot now is what happened last year.”
In 2 weeks, Lawson will get his first shot to show what he is capable of at the United States Grand Prix weekend.
