Jonathan Wheatley announced last year that he would be leaving his long-term position at Red Bull to join Sauber as team principal, preparing for Audi’s full entry into Formula 1 in 2026.

After serving his required period of gardening leave, Wheatley will officially take on his new role on April 1st, allowing him to be in position for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka that weekend.

During the opening rounds of the 2025 season, Sauber’s leadership will be managed by Chief Technical and Chief Executive Officer Mattia Binotto, who will act as de facto team principal in Wheatley’s absence.

Wheatley will then lead the management team at Sauber Motorsport AG alongside Binotto. Both will report directly to Gernot Döllner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sauber Motorsport AG.

Having played a crucial role in Red Bull’s dominance over the years, Wheatley brings a wealth of experience to Sauber. His leadership will be important as the team transitions into its new era under Audi, with high expectations for long-term success in the sport.
