Rumours swirled around at the Qatar Grand Prix that Esteban Ocon might step aside for the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Talks were reportedly taking place between Ocon and Alpine about wrapping up their time together early so they could focus on their plans for 2025, while the idea was to let reserve driver Jack Doohan step in and get a head start before becoming a full-time driver next year.

These rumours were confirmed on Monday when Alpine announced that Ocon would not race in Abu Dhabi, and Doohan would take his place.

This also allows Ocon to join Haas early for the post-season tyre test, helping him prepare for his move to the team in 2025. The agreement means that the French driver will skip the race, but both he and Alpine benefit from this arrangement.

Doohan had already spent some time in the car during two practice sessions earlier this year, but this will be his first full Formula 1 race weekend. It’s a big moment for the young Australian, giving him a chance to show what he can do and get ready for next season.

For Ocon, this marks the end of his five years with Alpine. While he won’t race in Abu Dhabi, he’ll still get some time on track with Haas during the post-season test.
