News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.A new MotoGP rookie is turning heads with data that eerily mirrors Marc Marquez’s performances. Fermin Aldeguer, who replaced Marquez at Gresini Racing, has shown flashes of brilliance—but can he handle the pressure and follow in the footsteps of a legend? Experts weigh in on his potential and what’s holding him back.
A new rookie has been compared to Marc Marquez, thanks to some eye-catching data. So let's break it down.
Fermin Aldeguer, the 19-year-old rookie, took Marquez’s spot at Gresini Racing, and he has put in numbers that, to some experts, remind them of Marquez.
Marquez almost dominated at the Thailand Grand Prix, as he secured pole position, won the sprint, and took victory in the race. But the real magic happened last year when he rode a year-old Ducati and still delivered stunning results.
That’s why some experts think Aldeguer could follow in his footsteps.
Neil Hodgson of TNT Sports spoke with Frankie Carchedi (a key figure on Aldeguer’s team) and revealed some interesting news:
“Frankie is very impressed with the 19-year-old sensation. He said, ‘Some of the things I’ve seen in the data are very Marquez-esque.’”
However, there is one big difference—Aldeguer’s inconsistency. While his talent is clear, he still struggles when things don’t go his way.
“When things aren’t going well, he gets stroppy!” Hodgson added.
Luckily, with an experienced crew chief guiding him, Aldeguer will learn to stay calm under pressure.
Future Star?
MotoGP analyst Michael Laverty also shared his opinion, highlighting how valuable these early comparisons are:
“Imagine being a rookie and hearing that someone who worked with one of the fastest riders ever is looking at your data and saying, ‘You’re doing something similar to Marc.’”
Laverty also pointed out that inconsistency is a weakness that can be improved. However, the key for Aldeguer will be to manage race weekends better, as he needs to stay focused even when things don’t start perfectly.
Ducati saw potential in him, making a bold move to sign him last year. So even though he finished 13th in both the sprint and the race, he is expected to improve over time.
Aldeguer’s ability to handle a year-old bike like Marquez did in 2024 makes many believe that he could be a future MotoGP star in the making.
