Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has stated that Max Verstappen proved he is the "real champion" in Formula 1 with his comeback victory at last week’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

At the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Max Verstappen delivered an incredible performance, moving from 17th place to win the race despite wet and difficult conditions.

The reigning champion got a bit lucky with the red flag timing but made basically no mistakes, passing other drivers smoothly and showing why he’s leading the championship.

With this win, he ended his ten-race winless streak, which was running since the Spanish Gran Prix in June, and is now 62 points ahead of his closest rival, Lando Norris, meaning he could claim his fourth consecutive title in Las Vegas.

For Norris, the race was frustrating. He started on pole position, but lost his lead to George Russell on the first lap and after a poorly-timed pit stop just before a red flag, his race only went downhill. A few small mistakes then dropped him down to sixth place, making it nearly impossible for him to catch Verstappen in the championship standings anymore.

After the race, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko was quick to compare Verstappen and Norris, saying that the Dutchman’s performance showed who the "real champion" is.

“All this nonsense that has been spread and then this,” Marko told Dutch De Telegraaf.

“Max was flying. He was faultless and we couldn't say that about Lando Norris.

“Whether this is a giant step toward the title? No, I think this is the title. Here you could see who the real champion is.”

Marko was so confident in Verstappen’s skill that he even made a bet with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, that the Dutchman would make it to the podium, but he went beyond his expectations, winning the race with a 19-second margin.

“With Max's race engineer I had bet that Max would get on the podium.

“Lambiase didn't think so. We put $100 on it, but I said only a podium and no victory.

“Max always wants to do better again.”

If Verstappen’s lead over Norris will be 60 points or more after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Dutchman will claim the world champion title before the final race of the season once again.
