Williams’ Franco Colapinto has dismissed rumours linking him to RB and clarified that he isn’t looking to secure a deal with the F1 team for the 2025 season.
Franco Colapinto’s recent performances have caught the attention of the F1 paddock and many fans as well.
As a mid-season replacement for Logan Sargeant at Williams, the young Argentinian has impressed with strong finishes and a calm approach.
In just five races, he’s scored five points and never finished lower than 12th, with another solid effort in Mexico, despite no points, showing his potential in the sport.
However, Williams already has Carlos Sainz joining Alex Albon next season, so there’s no full-time spot for Colapinto.
But his form has drawn interest from teams like Sauber, who may be open to giving him a seat, with even Williams boss James Vowles applying some pressure to help secure the young talent a place in Formula 1 next year.
Ahead of the Mexican Gran Prix, a rumour swirled around that Colapinto might sign with RB for 2025 if Red Bull decided to promote Liam Lawson to the main team.
However, Colapinto has dissmissed any rumors about joining RB. He says he’s likely to stay on the sidelines in 2025, at least for now, though his impressive debut keeps him in the conversation for future opportunities.
"No, at the moment, I don't understand much of what they are talking about. I don't know from where it came from," Colapinto told F1 TV.
"I don't have any seat for next year, and at the moment, I'm not racing Formula 1. I'm probably going to be racing somewhere else.
"So look, it's going to be maybe a year that I'm not going to be here, but I hope to be showing that I deserve a seat here enough to come back in '26 or '27. It is my goal, and it's why I'm doing what I can race after race.
"That's why [after qualifying] I was disappointed with the result and just trying to do my best session after session to try and show I deserve to be here."
Vowles has even hinted he’d consider loaning Colapinto out if it means he’d get a chance at a 2025 race seat. However, as Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko explained, that wouldn’t make sense for them or probably any other F1 team.
"The problem with him is that he has a long-term contract with Williams," Marko told Kleine Zeitung.
"[Taking him on loan] is not interesting for any team. You do not want to train a driver for another team."
Colapinto still remains one of the hottest candidates for the Sauber seat, although recent information suggest that Valtteri Bottas holds the advantage.
