The FIA will review racing guidelines after talks regarding the Verstappen-Norris incident from the US GP that took place during the F1 drivers' briefing at the Mexican GP.
Lando Norris received a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen on Lap 52 of last week’s United States Grand Prix.
This penalty pushed the British driver off the podium and cost him three valuable points in his championship fight against Verstappen.
Ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, McLaren decided to submit a request for a right of review of the penalty to the FIA, but wasn’t successful.
F1 drivers questioned the stewards’ decision as both of the drivers went off the track and called for a change as they feel the rule should be revised to include a clause stating that if a driver defending their position also goes off track, they should receive some form of penalty.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly said: “There’s one rule which needs to be changed. It’s that whoever has got their front axle first at the apex has got the priority.”
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton added: “You shouldn’t be able to come off the brakes and run more speed in and go off the track and still hold your place.”
According to BBC, the FIA informed drivers during Friday’s briefing that it would draft updated wording based on the specifics of Norris's incident with Max Verstappen in Austin.
The governing body has not specified what changes will be made, but the decision followed a discussion on the tactics Verstappen, who is known for stretching the rules pretty often, used to stay ahead of Norris.
“I don’t make the rules,” Verstappen said on Thursday.
“I just follow the rules as much as I can. I just implement the rules and play with them.”
The revision of the racing guidelines should be presented to the drivers later this year for their approval.
