The FIA has announced that former F1 driver Johnny Herbert will no longer serve as a steward during grand prix weekends.

Herbert, who has been a key figure in the stewarding panel for the past 15 years, played a crucial role in deliberating on on-track incidents and issuing penalties when necessary.

Alongside his stewarding responsibilities, Herbert has remained an active presence in the media, frequently offering his views on major F1 topics. Over the past year, he has provided numerous interviews, sometimes to betting companies, which later circulated his comments through media outlets in exchange for promotional links.

Just last week, Herbert indicated that he expected to continue in his role, even sharing his thoughts on the upcoming Australian Grand Prix. The FIA, however, has determined that Herbert’s growing media commitments are incompatible with his stewarding duties.

This decision follows a series of high-profile interventions, including his assessment of penalties such as the one given to Max Verstappen for colliding with Lando Norris last year. While Herbert’s expertise has been valued, the governing body ultimately decided to part ways.

In a statement, the FIA thanked Herbert for his contributions, saying: “Johnny is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role. However, after discussion, it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible.”
