Former F1 driver David Coulthard compared Lando Norris to some big figures in the sport like Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna, after the British driver completely dominated the Singapore Grand Prix.
Lando Norris completely dominated the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. After starting from pole position, he led every lap of the race and crossed the finish line 21 seconds ahead of the championship leader Max Verstappen, marking his third victory of the season and the entire F1 career.
The British driver also almost scored a Grand Slam, which is a feat achieved by a driver who wins a Grand Prix from pole position, leading every lap of the race, and setting the fastest lap of the race. It would be only the second one of the season after Verstappen’s one in Bahrain. However, Daniel Ricciardo managed to set the fastest lap on the final lap of the race and therefore, Norris has to wait a bit longer for his first Grand Slam.
Although he didn't achieve that milestone, former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard was still highly impressed by Norris' performance.
“It was a master class in a kiss without removing a corner [of the car]," Coulthard told Channel 4.
"It shows he has it down to perfection.
“The only one that really surprised me was at the end of the lap when he had that lock up, and then ended up, I think it was at Turn 14, just touching the Tecpro barrier there.
“Otherwise flawless. What a performance. Human and machine in perfect harmony.
“He was like that from first practice on Friday, had the upper hand on Oscar [Piastri], who did a really solid job to come back through and pick up that podium.”
Coulthard stated that Norris, in his current form, reminds him of legendary drivers like seven-time champions Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, along with Brazilian great Ayrton Senna.
“Lando [Norris], he’s so humble and so approachable,” Coulthard added.
“He doesn't realise how great and significant his performances are right now.
“I’ve sort of got a squeaky voice here, but I want to put him in the sort of, you know, Senna, Schumacher, Hamilton at-his-best type of performances.
“We can all win a grand prix by getting a bit lucky, but this was exceptional.”
After the Singapore Grand Prix Norris sits 52 points behind Max Verstappen in the championship with 6 races remaining until the end of the season. The McLaren driver aims to close the gap as he seeks to secure his first F1 title and prevent Verstappen from achieving his fourth consecutive championship.
