Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has said the team will allow Sergio Perez to “make his own conclusions” as the team appears ready to end their partnership following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez’s 2024 season has been nothing short of disastrous. Despite starting the year with high expectations, after signing a two-year contract extension, his performances have fallen far below what Red Bull needs from a teammate to Max Verstappen.
While Verstappen stormed to his fourth drivers’ title, Perez struggled for consistency and now it is sure that he will finish the season a disappointing eighth place in the standings. His poor form has not only hurt his reputation but also made it hard for Red Bull in the Constructor’s Championship.
Perez's struggles were even more highlighted at the Qatar Grand Prix. Starting ninth, he showed promise by overtaking Lewis Hamilton and gaining positions during the chaos of the race. But his race fell apart when he spun under the Safety Car, leaving his car stuck and ending his race.
Red Bull’s management now seems ready to make changes. The team’s shareholders will meet after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to finalize their driver lineup for 2025.
While the team has not publicly confirmed Pérez’s exit, reports suggest they plan to replace him next year. Liam Lawson is the leading candidate for the seat, though Yuki Tsunoda could still have a chance if he impresses during a test in Abu Dhabi.
The team principal Christian Horner has even encouraged Perez to consider his next steps, signaling that Red Bull may be preparing to move on.
“Look, Checo has had a very tough year,” he said quoted by Motorsport Week.
“And obviously the points tables are what they are.
“We’re very much focused on really supporting him to the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.
“And then it’s not an enjoyable situation for Checo being in this position with speculation every week.
“He’s old enough and wise enough to know what the situation is. Let’s see where we are after Abu Dhabi.”
When asked if his comments suggested the choice was Perez’s to make, he replied: “Look, I’m going to let Checo come to his own conclusions.
“Nobody’s forcing him one way or another. I’m going to let him… it’s not a nice situation for him to obviously be in.”
