News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsFormer F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone doubts Lewis Hamilton will win his eighth title, instead expecting him to struggle against Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton is set to join Ferrari in 2025, teaming up with Charles Leclerc in hopes of winning his long-awaited eighth world title.
After more than a decade with Mercedes, Hamilton is making the switch following a challenging season with his current team, whose car hasn’t been able to match the speed of Red Bull, Ferrari nor McLaren.
The Maranello team, on the other hand, is seen as a promising choice, especially after their impressive performance this year with 5 victories and a current second position in the Constructor’s Championship, 175 points ahead of Mercedes.
Not everyone, though, believes Hamilton’s move to Ferrari will guarantee a championship win. Bernie Ecclestone, former CEO of Formula 1, recently shared his doubts.
When asked by Daily Mail if Ecclestone thinks Hamilton would win his eighth world title with Ferrari, he said: "I believe he won't.
"I don't think it will be easy for Lewis. Especially in that team.
"They will back Charles Leclerc. He's quick and has grown up there. They won't dump him for anyone.
"However, from Lewis’ point of view, it may not have been a mistake to join Ferrari. He couldn't exist any longer at Mercedes. Either he's given up with them or they have given up on him. They wouldn't do much to keep him, so he is better off going."
Ecclestone, who has known Hamilton for much of his career, thinks that Ferrari signed Hamilton partly as a status move, suggesting that Ferrari’s chairperson, John Elkann, wanted the prestige of having the seven-time champion on the team.
"For John Elkann, the guy who runs it, it was a big ego thing. He thought he had captured the best guy the world had ever seen.
"When he signed him there was nothing to indicate he was wrong in that assessment. Whether he is still happy with that is another story. Only time will tell.
"If Lewis is fading, which I don't like to see, he should go away and do something else, and do a good job at it."
Hamilton’s final season at Mercedes has had its ups and downs. He has struggled with the car, often trailing behind teammate George Russell, who’s constantly managed to get more out of it. After bad results in recent races, Hamilton even shared that he can’t wait till the 2024 season is over.
