2025 F1 Regulation changes overview - what is new?

The 2025 Formula 1 season introduces several updates aimed at improving driver welfare, enhancing competition, and refining the sporting structure:

Technical Regulations

  • Minimum weight: The driver weight allowance increases from 80 kg to 82 kg, raising the car’s minimum weight from 798 kg to 800 kg, ensuring fairness for taller drivers.
  • Driver cooling: A cooling system will be mandatory in extreme heat (above 30.5°C). Cars equipped with the system will see their minimum weight increased by 5 kg to accommodate the equipment.
  • DRS changes: Adjustments to the rear wing’s DRS slot gaps reduce the range slightly, and stricter rules ensure precise reversion to the default wing position after deactivation.

Sporting Regulations

  • Fastest lap point: The point for the fastest lap, introduced in 2019, is abolished.
  • Young driver practice: Teams must now field young drivers in free practice sessions twice per season per car.
  • Testing restrictions: Teams are limited to 20 days of previous car testing, with active drivers restricted to 1,000 km over four days. Testing is prohibited on race venues within 60 days of the event.
  • Qualifying backup plans: In case of qualifying cancellations, starting grids will be based on Drivers' Championship standings. If unavailable (applied for the 1st race of the season), stewards retain discretion.
  • Grid adjustments: Final grid positions are locked one hour before the race. Cars withdrawn up to 75 minutes before the race will not appear on the grid, and others will move up accordingly.
