Alex Rins reflects on his ongoing challenges in adapting his riding style to the Yamaha M1 during his debut season in MotoGP. Despite his efforts to mirror teammate Fabio Quartararo’s approach, Rins acknowledges the unique obstacles he faces as the season draws to a close.
Alex Rins has acknowledged that he is still battling with adapting his riding style to the Yamaha M1. He believes that he himself cannot replicate Fabio Quartararo’s approach in MotoGP.
As the end of the season nears, Rins’s first season with Yamaha is coming to a close. He has consistently struggled to reach the performance level of his teammate Fabio Quartararo. This trend continues in Thailand, with Quartararo finishing 12th overall while Rins ended up in 18th.
Rins’s 2023 MotoGP season was disrupted by an injury, meaning that the transition from Honda to Yamaha has created additional challenges as Rins tries to return to the form that earned him a victory with Honda last year.
Rins's move to Yamaha came during a period when the team has been struggling to extract more potential from the M1. He admits that, with his best finish of ninth this season, the bike still doesn’t complement his riding style.
"Every time I come back from the track, I try to provide constructive feedback, but I still don’t feel they’ve given me a bike that fits my riding style," Rins said after Friday’s practice for the Thailand Grand Prix. The rider also believes that trying to copy Quartararo’s approach wouldn’t be effective, especially now when Quartararo is having problems reaching the top of the grid.
"I can’t just copy Fabio’s style; it’s not the way I ride," he said. "When I return from the track, I give the best feedback I can. MotoGP is full of talented people, and Yamaha has some of the best. Obviously, Fabio is going through a rough patch. He’s a champion with many wins on this bike, but he’s also facing challenges now, and there’s a reason for that."
Reflecting on Yamaha’s struggles, Rins added, "We’re in a time of stress and evolution. Maybe this is just part of the journey we have to go through."
