News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Alex Marquez has shocked the MotoGP world by taking the championship lead for the first time. With consistent podiums and strong performances, he’s proving to be a serious contender. But can he hold onto the top spot?
Alex Marquez is leading the championship standings for the first time in his career after securing second place behind Francesco Bagnaia. In a post-race interview, Alex admitted he never expected to be at the top but, instead of stressing, he is determined to enjoy the moment.
When speaking to Crash.Net, Alex also expressed his surprise at the situation.
“If you had told me before the first race that I would be leading the championship, I would have said, ‘You’re crazy!’” he said with a smile.
Alex has finished in second place in all races and sprints this season so far, which has officially earned him the nickname ‘Mr. P2.’ However, he isn’t embarrassed by it—he’s actually embracing it.
“I’m happy with that! I have no problem finishing second from now until the end if it keeps me in the title fight. We just have to keep working hard, enjoy this moment, and push for the best results possible.”
Despite his consistent second-place finishes, Alex admitted that the race at Austin felt like his worst so far in 2025. The problem was that he struggled to keep up with his brother, Marc Marquez, and Francesco Bagnaia, which he blamed on the tricky track conditions.
“If I compare my performance in Thailand, Argentina, and here, this was the worst in terms of feeling and how I handled the corners,” he explained.
Things got even more complicated when he almost lost control at Turn 10.
“In that moment, I told myself, ‘Okay, today is a third-place kind of day. Stay calm.’”
However, the race took an unexpected turn in his favor when Marc Marquez crashed out from the lead.
“When I saw Marc go down, I thought, ‘Alright, pay attention, don’t make mistakes.’”
Alex is putting COTA behind him and focusing on the rest of the season. He is excited to see how his performance will unfold.
“We’re managing things really well, staying in the top three consistently, and that’s exactly what we need to keep doing.”
With only a few races completed, this season is shaping up to be an exciting one. The big question remains: Can Alex maintain his lead, or will his brother reclaim the top spot soon?
