The 2025 MotoGP season hit the desert heat of Qatar with high expectations—and it didn’t disappoint. From dominant wins and rookie breakthroughs to costly mistakes and shattered hopes, the Lusail International Circuit served up a dramatic weekend of racing. So, who’s leaving Qatar with a smile, and who’s heading home with regrets? Let’s break down the biggest winners and losers of the Grand Prix.
Loser: Francesco Bagnaia
Even though things started well for him, with him having good pace on Friday and securing a direct place in Q2, he was confident and ready to fight his teammate Marc Marquez.
Then he crashed in qualifying, leaving him to start 11th. In the sprint, he could not manage to fight his way up. Yet on Sunday, he managed to finish on the podium.
Winner: Maverick Viñales
Viñales already impressed in Texas and continued his performance in Qatar. He qualified strong and even led for a bit in the race. Yet in the end, he lost to Marquez.
His sprint was ruined by a weird tyre call, and the post-race penalty pushed him from 2nd to 14th place. But still, this was his best performance of the season, and it will not be forgotten easily.
Loser: Fabio Di Giannantonio
After a podium in Texas, Di Giannantonio hoped to maintain the momentum. He qualified 5th and was quick, but his sprint was destroyed by bad starts.
In the main race, he was taken out by Alex Marquez just when he got into the top 5, making it a weekend to forget. Later in the race, he also made contact with another rider and with the falling Jorge Martin.
Winner: Marc Marquez
Marc came into Qatar calling it his weak circuit, but by the end of the weekend, he proved everyone wrong. He took pole position, won both the sprint and the race, and even set the fastest laps in both.
He didn’t lead every lap, but as he admitted, that was only a strategy to manage his tyres.
Loser: Alex Marquez
Alex has been Mr. P2 and the most consistent rider in 2025, and he even went into the weekend as the championship leader. But this weekend, everything went wrong.
He crashed in practice, could not challenge his brother in the sprint, and then the main race came. He made contact with his brother at Turn 1, then also took out Di Giannantonio, which earned him a long-lap penalty. So now, he is second in the standings with a gap of 17 points.
Winner: Fermin Aldeguer
Fermin is becoming the best rookie of the year with every race. After an incredible Texas performance, he followed up with P4 in the sprint and P5 in the Grand Prix at Qatar.
He even outpaced his teammate Alex Marquez for the first time this season. And if he keeps up this performance, regular top-10 finishes will be around the corner.
Winner: Fabio Quartararo
Qatar was an incredible weekend for Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha. He managed to qualify on the front row for the first time since 2022 and finished fifth in the sprint.
In the main race, he finished 7th, giving him a reality check after the weekend, but it is still a really good result for Yamaha, as it showed signs of progress.
