It has been 4 years since MotoGP last time raced in Brno. Now the Czech Grand Prix is expected to make a comeback in 2025. Let’s take a trip back to the past and remember what happened last time when MotoGP raced at the Masaryk Circuit in 2020.
The 2020 Czech MotoGP Grand Prix at Brno was a landmark race, mainly due to Brad Binder's unexpected and historic victory. Riding for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Binder clinched his first-ever MotoGP win, making him the first South African to achieve this feat in the premier class. This victory was also a monumental moment for KTM, marking their first MotoGP win since they entered the series in 2017. Binder's triumph was even more impressive considering it was only his third race in the MotoGP class.
The race itself was notable for the unusual circumstances surrounding the top competitors. Many of the usual frontrunners struggled in Brno, with the challenging track conditions and lack of grip playing a significant role.
Fabio Quartararo, who had won the first two races of the season and was leading the championship, could only manage seventh place, after he lost a finish-line battle with Miguel Oliveira.
Similarly, other top riders like Maverick Viñales and Andrea Dovizioso finished outside the podium, further emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the race.
Binder's victory was complemented by strong performances from other unexpected contenders. Franco Morbidelli, riding for Petronas Yamaha SRT, finished second, securing his first MotoGP podium. Johann Zarco, who started from pole position, finished third for Esponsorama Racing, despite receiving a long lap penalty during the race and celebrated his first podium since 2018 Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Czech Grand Prix thus stood out as one of the most surprising and memorable races of the 2020 season, shaking up the championship standings and showcasing the best of motorcycle racing.
