The MotoGP season finale in Valencia has been officially canceled due to the devastating flooding in the region. Dorna is now exploring alternative venues and dates for the championship decider, which may be held later this month.
Valencia will officially not host the MotoGP season finale. Despite the organizers trying to stick to the plan, Dorna has decided otherwise due to the tragic flooding. Dorna is now looking for an alternative venue to hold the race, even considering rescheduling it to a later date than the originally planned weekend of November 15-17.
With the paddock now in Malaysia, discussions are underway regarding this decision, given the sensitive circumstances. On Thursday, Dorna, in coordination with the FIM, aimed to keep Valencia as the venue for the finale. However, as the situation evolved, the option of moving the race to a week later on November 24 briefly emerged.
By Friday afternoon, Dorna's leadership had reconsidered its decision. The organization is now focused on finding an alternative location to conclude the championship battle between Jorge Martin and Pecco Bagnaia, which may also be decided on Sunday in Malaysia, but only if Martin scores 21 points more than Bagnaia.
While Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta stated on Thursday, “In principle, the original date [of the event] is maintained,” the devastating news from Valencia has made holding the finale impossible, as even other scheduled sporting events have been canceled.
In this tragic situation, Dorna has determined that there is no ethical justification for organizing the Grand Prix there.
Prominent riders, including Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia, have expressed strong objections to racing under the current circumstances. Marquez stated, “I hope they [at Dorna] take into consideration the ethical implications of what is happening. It is not right to race there.” He added that he would not travel to Valencia even if it meant losing the championship title.
Currently, four potential venues are rumored for the season finale: Qatar, Jerez, Barcelona, and Portimao. If Qatar is selected, MotoGP would need to find a date likely on November 24, as Formula 1 is scheduled to use the track the following week.
It is clear that the final race of the season will not take place in Valencia, as MotoGP has officially confirmed this on its Instagram.
