TRACK OVERVIEW

The Monza Circuit, located just outside Milan, is one of the most historic and legendary tracks in motorsport. Known as the “Temple of Speed,” Monza has been a staple of the F1 calendar since 1950 and is the fastest circuit in the championship, featuring long straights and high-speed corners.

With an emphasis on top speed and minimal downforce, Monza presents a big challenge for teams, as cars must be set up for maximum straight-line performance while maintaining stability through the chicanes. The passionate Tifosi (Ferrari fans) create an electrifying atmosphere, making it one of the most exciting races of the season.

  • Race distance: 53 laps (total distance of 306.720 km)
  • Lap record: 1:21.046 by Rubens Barrichello (2004)
  • Most wins: Michael Schumacher & Lewis Hamilton (5 victories each)

KEY SECTIONS OF THE CIRCUIT

  • Turn 1-2 (Variante del Rettifilo): The tight first chicane is a prime overtaking zone, but also a frequent hotspot for first-lap incidents. Braking stability is crucial here.
  • Turn 3 (Curva Grande): A sweeping right-hand corner taken flat out, leading into the next chicane.
  • Turn 4-5 (Variante della Roggia): A slower section where precision is needed; a popular overtaking spot but also a place where mistakes happen.
  • Turn 6-7 (Lesmo 1 & Lesmo 2): Two high-speed right-handers that challenge car balance, especially with the gravel traps waiting to punish mistakes.
  • Turn 8-9-10 (Variante Ascari): A high-speed complex requiring perfect positioning to maximize exit speed onto the back straight.
  • Turn 11 (Parabolica, now “Curva Alboreto”): One of F1’s most famous corners, this long right-hander determines the speed down Monza’s massive main straight. Drivers must be precise to optimize lap times.

BEST GRANDSTANDS FOR SPECTATORS

  • Main Grandstand: The best place to witness the start, pit stops, and the podium celebrations.
  • Prima Variante Grandstand: Positioned at Turn 1, this is the perfect spot for first-lap drama and intense overtaking battles.
  • Seconda Variante Grandstand: Overlooking the Roggia chicane, offering great views of braking duels.
  • Lesmo Grandstands: Located near the high-speed Lesmo corners, where cars are on the limit.
  • Ascari Grandstand: Overlooks the spectacular Ascari Chicane, where cars change direction at high speeds.
  • Parabolica Grandstand: Provides a breathtaking view of the final turn before cars blast down the main straight.

HOW TO GET TO THE TRACK

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is located inside Monza Park, around 20 km north of Milan.

  • Train & Shuttle: Take a train from Milan’s Centrale, Porta Garibaldi, or Lambrate stations to Monza station, then use the official shuttle buses to the circuit.
  • Metro & Bus: Take Milan’s Metro Line M1 to Sesto 1 Maggio FS, then board a bus to the track.
  • Car & Parking: Limited parking is available near the circuit, but heavy race-day traffic means arriving early is essential.
  • Bike & Walking: Monza Park is accessible by foot or bicycle, making this a great alternative to avoid congestion.

RACE DAY TIPS

  • Arrive early: Monza gets crowded, especially on race day. Explore fan zones and support races before the main event.
  • Bring ear protection: Monza is one of the loudest circuits due to the high-speed nature of the track.
  • Dress for the weather: September in Italy can still be quite warm, so lightweight clothing is recommended.
  • Stay hydrated: Bring a refillable bottle, as hydration stations are available inside the circuit.
  • Plan your exit: Post-race traffic is heavy, so consider staying at the track a bit longer or taking a later train.

WHERE TO STAY

  • Milan City Center: Offers the widest range of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife, with easy transport links to Monza.
  • Monza Town: A quieter alternative, with hotels closer to the circuit, however early booking is necessary.
  • Sesto San Giovanni: A budget-friendly option with quick metro and train access to both Milan and Monza.
  • Lake Como Area: If you’re extending your trip, staying near Lake Como offers scenic views and a relaxing experience post-race.
