Red Bull's technical director, Pierre Wache, has admitted that the team is not confident about its prospects in F1 next year and is a bit worried about how the RB21 would be able to match the rival’s pace.
After the summer break, McLaren’s Lando Norris became a strong threat to Red Bull, pushing the team to solve problems with their RB20 car.
Max Verstappen and the team worked hard to find the missing speed, and this helped them take control of the Driver's Championship once again. Verstappen’s impressive drive in the wet Sao Paulo Grand Prix was key, setting him up to secure the title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, despite finishing behind Mercedes and Ferrari in the race.
Even though Red Bull managed to overcome their doubts and win the Drivers’ Championship this year, they aren’t so sure about the 2025 season.
The team knows that their strong start to this year, with Verstappen winning four out of the first five races, helped them a lot in the title bid, but they’re cautious about what’s ahead.
Red Bull’s technical director Pierre Wache said that the team is happy with the progress they made with the RB20 and how quickly they were able to fix the balance issues, but they aren’t getting too optimistic for next year.
"We are happy with what we have done quickly," he said, quoted by Motorsport.com, but admits there will be more challenges to face in the future.
"I'm not confident for '25. I'm not confident because I think the others are very quick or are there. It will be a fight for the full year."
However, at the same time, he believes that his cautious view could actually benefit the team, as it will drive them to search for more performance and improvements in the RB21.
"If you have confidence in this business, you are dead," Wache said.
"You have to work hard, and everybody has to, in the team, work hard. Everybody's working hard.
"When you see the number of people we have trying to find a very small amount of performance and add and add and add everywhere, it is a very difficult task.
"I have a lack of confidence, because if I have confidence, you go to sleep, you don't go to work, and then you don't find performance."
