Lando Norris spoke about his title bid and revealed that he doesn’t feel like McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri has to sacrifice his F1 victories for him.
Heading to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, taking place this weekend in the streets of Baku, Lando Norris is sitting 62 points behind the reigning champion and championship leader Max Verstappen in the Driver's Championship standings. With the RB20 not really listening to what Red Bull or Verstappen wants, McLaren smells the possibility of capturing both championship titles.
Team Principal Andrea Stella revealed earlier that McLaren will prioritize Lando Norris for the rest of the season to help him in the battle for the title.
Lando Norris was asked if he expects teammate Oscar Piastri to even sacrifice his possible victories for him this season.
"No,” said Norris, who is quoted by Motosport.com.
“In general, probably for lower positions, but if he's fought for a win and he's deserving of a win, then he deserves to win."
With 232 points left up for grabs across the final eight rounds, Norris acknowledged that receiving priority only for lower positions could potentially cost him the title by the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi. However, he emphasized that he wants to win the world championship on merit, not by any means necessary.
"I'm sure it will hurt, but I'm also here to race," Norris answered when asked how he would feel if he were to miss out on the title by a few points.
"And if a driver is doing better than me and performing, I need to do a better job, so I wouldn't want to take that away from someone.
"I also don't want to be given a championship. Yes, it would be great to have a championship, and on the short term you feel amazing, but I don't think you'd be proud of that in the long run.
"That's not something I want, that's not how I want to win a championship. I want to win it by fighting against Max, by beating Max, beating my competitors, and proving that I'm the best on track. And that's how I want to win,” he revealed.
