Formula 2 title contender Paul Aron has been confirmed as Alpine’s reserve driver for the 2025 F1 season.

Aron will step into the role previously held by Jack Doohan, who is set to join the F1 grid next season.

Currently fourth in the F2 standings, the 20-year-old driver remains in contention for the title after securing pole position for the Qatar race. Aron will reunite with Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes, who founded his current F2 team, Hitech Grand Prix, in 2015.

“It’s incredibly special to join BWT Alpine Formula One Team,” Aron said. “This is clearly a fantastic environment for a young driver, and I’m very grateful to Flavio [Briatore, executive advisor] and Oliver for this opportunity.

“Before stepping into the reserve role in 2025, my immediate focus is on the F2 championship. I’m determined to give my all in the title fight and continue progressing in my motorsport career.”

Aron is currently ranked as the second-best rookie in the F2 standings, trailing behind championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto, who has secured a Sauber seat for 2025 and will join Aron on the front row for Sunday’s race.

Executive advisor Flavio Briatore expressed confidence in Aron’s potential: “We are delighted to welcome Paul to BWT Alpine Formula One Team as our 2025 reserve driver. Formula 1 is undergoing a generational shift, with many young drivers making their mark. We see Paul as one of the brightest talents and look forward to helping him develop into a future F1 driver.”
