News.gp journalist and a girl with big dreamsOscar Piastri is confident he has everything needed to compete for the world champion title but admits he must use his skills consistently to succeed.
Oscar Piastri believes he is ready to fight for the Formula 1 world champion title in 2025 after a successful 2024 season.
“I think so, yes. I've still got some learning and improving to do,” he told German outlet Auto Motor und Sport, when asked if he could be a 2025 title challenger.
“I feel like now I'm getting to a stage where on certain days I feel like I have almost all the tools that I need. I'm just not putting them together as much as I want to and I feel like last year I didn't have all the tools that I needed. I had some of them, but I still was missing some.”
The McLaren driver stood out last year, winning two Grand Prix races and helping McLaren secure its first Constructors’ Championship since 1998. Looking ahead, Piastri is confident he has everything he needs to win his first title but admits the key will be using his strengths consistently.
The young Australian has also made this impressive progress in a short time. After a learning year as a rookie in 2023, he ended 2024 in fourth place in the championship. He finished 82 points behind his teammate Lando Norris and 145 points behind champion Max Verstappen, but his steady improvement showed he has his place in the team and what it takes to compete at the top level.
However, even with McLaren’s success, there were challenges. The team faced criticism for how it handled team orders, especially in moments that affected the points gap between Norris and Piastri. Despite these controversies, both drivers worked together to bring McLaren back to the top, showing the team’s potential for the future, with many seeing Piastri as a good team player.
As 2025 approaches, Piastri is now focused on building on his strong form. With the competition expected to be even closer this season, he knows that combining all his strengths is the key.
“Just putting it all together a bit more is, I think, what's going to be needed.
“So now that you're at the front, you get exposed for anything that you can't do perfectly more than what you would being a bit further back in the pack.
“But I feel like I have all the tools I need. I just need to be able to deploy them all the time.”
