News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.MotoGP is expected to announce that the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya may host the season finale on November 17, replacing the cancelled Valencia GP. This follows catastrophic flooding in Valencia that forced Dorna to seek a new venue urgently. While Barcelona has emerged as the leading option, an official confirmation is still pending as discussions with local authorities continue.
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is expected to host the season finale on November 17, even though it already held the sixth round in May.
This change comes after a decision to cancel the Valencia race due to catastrophic flooding in recent days.
The championship promoter, Dorna, had previously announced that it would share more details about the final round later, as it hurried to arrange a replacement.
Barcelona has become the preferred option over Qatar, which many had considered the top alternative. Many teams, especially in Moto2 and Moto3, favored Barcelona because their budgets are quite limited at this stage of the season. Returning to Doha would have posed a financial problem for several teams.
While Qatar might seem logistically simpler and have fewer emotional ties, it also presented logistical challenges. Additionally, Qatar is preparing to host a Formula 1 race on December 1.
Meanwhile, riders were open to the idea of racing in Barcelona, which is closer to Valencia.
MotoGP officials met with the Catalan government on Sunday morning to finalize the race deal. Following the agreement, the CEO of Dorna briefed the MotoGP teams’ association about the latest developments.
After the Barcelona Grand Prix, an official test is scheduled for Tuesday, November 19, at the same venue.
“We felt it was crucial to inform the riders before they went out on track yesterday, particularly those fighting for key positions, to confirm that a final event would be added to the calendar,” Carlos Ezpeleta explained on Sunday morning.
“It’s been an incredibly tough few days, even more so for the people of Valencia. But given the importance of the Championship from both a sporting and fan perspective, we felt it necessary to hold a season-ending race. We owe it to the paddock and our global fanbase.
“We explored every possible alternative over the past 48 hours, and despite the tight timeline, we believe Barcelona is the most viable option. Its proximity to Valencia makes it easier for fans, many of whom were already traveling to the finale, and for the teams. From this location, we can also support the Valencia community.
“For this reason, we requested permission from the Government of Catalunya to host the race there. They wish to coordinate with the Governments of Spain and Valencia before making an official announcement, which we expect within the next 48 hours.
"Right now, our primary concern remains the situation in Valencia, not the race confirmation. Once it is confirmed, we’ll work tirelessly to make it happen. It’s a significant challenge, but we believe it’s the right thing to do for our fans.
“We are deeply grateful to the entire MotoGP community, the riders, and the teams for their proactive efforts, support, and collaboration.”
