The historic Autodromo Nazionale Monza is undergoing significant changes for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, including track resurfacing, pitlane renovations, and adjustments to the first chicane. As Formula 1 modernizes, these upgrades are crucial to Monza’s place on the calendar and could have a major impact on this year’s race.
The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, which has hosted almost every Formula 1 race, is set to introduce some significant changes for the 2024 Italian Grand Prix. Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali has made it clear that older circuits must modernize to secure their place on the F1 calendar and meet Liberty Media’s recent requirements. In response, the circuit has undergone a major overhaul for this weekend, including new grandstands and an updated track surface.
So what are the new upgrades? First of all, both the track and pitlane have been completely resurfaced, with the pitlane also receiving additional renovations. The resurfacing has smoothed out previous imperfections and improved drainage, including the addition of access tunnels. The kerbs have either been replaced or lowered, while the Rettifilo and Della Roggia chicanes have been equipped with new gravel traps.
The major change is to the first chicane, which has always been key to overtaking. From the photos, it’s visible that the width of the asphalted surface at the first chicane is wider than it was in the past. This change is likely intended to reduce the risk of incidents at the first braking point.
So how will the changes impact this year’s cars? In August, Pirelli engineers conducted tests at Monza. Their report stated that the new tarmac is much darker, which means it absorbs more heat than the old surface, a critical factor for tire wear. This means that tire management will be crucial, especially with the forecasted weather, which is expected to be around 30 degrees.
