Aston Martin’s Team Principal Mike Krack expressed enthusiasm about Adrian Newey's arrival as the new Managing Technical Partner and Shareholder and shared that Fernando Alonso was willing to sacrifice a part of his salary, to bring the famous designer into the team.
Aston Martin has announced this week that the famous F1 designer will join the team, which has a bright future ahead under the leadership of Lawrence Stroll.
In May, Newey revealed he was leaving Red Bull, ending an 18-year partnership. As a legendary Formula 1 designer, he helped the Milton Keynes-based team to win 7 Driver’s and 6 Constructor’s Championships over the years.
Newey will begin his role with Aston Martin in March 2025 and will immediately start working on the 2026 car as it is the year when the new rules and regulations are set to be brought to Formula 1.
Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which is taking place this weekend in Baku, Mike Krack spoke his mind about the feeling of having Adrian Newey on board.
"It's very exciting for all of us. I'm still smiling. Do you see me smiling?,” said Krack, who is quoted by Autosport.
"It was difficult to stop smiling. I think it's fantastic news for us as a team. The enthusiasm is enormous. It was a very badly kept secret. But when the news was communicated internally, it was just mega to see 800 people cheering.
“Then when Adrian came on the stage, it was even more so. That was really nice, very impressive.
He mentioned that Alonso was willing to sacrifice a part of his salary to bring Newey to Aston Martin.
"I think it is clear Fernando has a long future in this team. He was all excited about it on Tuesday also when we had the discussions.
“He was even saying that he will pay his wages to pay Adrian. There was a talk about 10%, 20%. So I will find out later today how much it really is," he added.
