Marc Marquez shares the challenges and doubts he faced during his time with Honda, including injury struggles and a declining bike performance. Discover how his bold move to Ducati revived his career and restored his confidence in MotoGP.
Marc Marquez has revealed his feelings about parting ways with Honda. He admitted that he began to question whether his career was coming to an end due to injuries and an uncompetitive bike. Marquez won six titles with Honda, but his career took a major turn when he suffered an arm injury in 2020. The injury required four surgeries over several years, causing him to miss significant time on the track. During this period, Ducati began to rise and dominate on track, while Marquez's recovery left him with doubts about his future.
When Marquez finally regained his fitness, Honda had fallen to the back of the grid. Despite this, Marquez continued to outperform his Honda teammates, even managing to get a third-place finish at Motegi in 2023. However, with Honda’s performance declining and his future uncertain, Marquez made the bold decision to leave Honda for Ducati.
This move proved to be another turning point, but this time for the better. In 2024, Marquez regained his winning form and secured three victories. He also signed a contract with Factory Ducati to join them in 2025. Reflecting on his time at Honda, Marquez admitted that there were moments when he truly questioned if his career was over. "Two years ago, one year ago, many people—even me—had doubts," he said. "I had some question marks if my time was over."
Despite these doubts, Marquez stayed determined to do everything he could to regain his competitive form and win more titles. "When I retire, I don't want to have any regrets about not trying something different," he explained. "I will try everything I can to feel competitive and fight for titles every year." His move to Gresini was a key step in regaining his confidence.
Marquez's victory at the 2024 Aragon Grand Prix ended his three-year winless streak. Marquez later admitted that this win was very important in rebuilding his self-confidence. "Victories give you a lot of confidence," he said. "After struggling for years, with four surgeries, and not getting good results, you start to lose confidence. You begin questioning whether it's the bike, your physical condition, or you. Step by step, you need to answer those questions, and wins, podiums, and victories were key in helping me regain that confidence."
