James Vowles is exploring 2025 Formula 1 seat options for Franco Colapinto, since there are no available seats at Williams for next year.
It hasn't been long since Franco Colapinto replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams for the Italian Grand Prix and since that weekend, he has impressed not only his team boss but also many fans and key figures in the sport.
He further grabbed attention by scoring his first F1 points in just his second race, in Azerbaijan, securing a valuable P8 for the British stable after a great qualifying performance.
The following weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix, he narrowly missed out on points, finishing in P11 but once again proved his worthiness of an F1 seat.
However, Colapinto’s seat at Williams is only temporary, as he will be replaced by Carlos Sainz next season, with the Spaniard having secured his contract with the team well before Colapinto stepped in for Sargeant.
Williams’ Team Principal, James Wolves, is now doing everything he can to secure a seat for Colapinto in Formula 1 next season.
“First and foremost, he’s worthy of being a Formula 1 driver, so we will do what we have to – to a certain extent – to make it work in that regard,” Vowles said on the Beyond the Grid Podcast.
“I’m not sure where Sauber are in their decision making and I’m not sure where VCARB are in their decision making.
“What’s really important to me is that I trusted him and in return he’s trusted me, and that means a huge amount to us as an organisation, so now finding the way forward for him to be a professional racing driver in Formula 1 is key – I just can’t tell you what it looks like because each team is different in how they talk.”
He also mentioned how Colapinto impressed him with his immediate performance, surpassing his expectations.
“What I didn’t expect to happen is how quickly he’s got up to speed – I thought it would take him another few races to be there, so we’d be in the Americas before he picked up,” Vowles explained.
“Where his strengths are, him personally, he can take all of this pressure, thousands of things that come at you, and just deal with it in his stride. He’s never flustered, he’s never panicked, he’s never overloaded. He’s just, ‘give me more, and I can give you more back’.”
Williams is currently in eighth place in the Constructors' Championship with 16 points, a quarter of which were secured by Colapinto. The team is aiming for even better results in 2025 with a strong driver lineup featuring Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, slowly trying to find the memorable strong form from the 1990’s.
