Rookie Franco Colapinto, who replaced Logan Sargeant in Williams two weeks ago, has already scored more points than the American driver for 1,5 years in F1.
Franco Colapinto finished eight in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and scored 4 points for Williams in his second race in Formula 1.
After a great qualifying, where the Argentine driver managed to secure ninth place ahead of his teammate Alexander Albon, he drove an amazing race today and together with Albon, they secured a valuable double-point finish for Williams.
That accomplishment tastes even better for Colapinto, as he achieved in only 2 races something that the driver, who he replaced 2 weeks ago, Logan Sargeant, hasn’t been able to do for 1,5 years in F1. He scored 4 points for Williams, while Sargeant only one over the whole time.
Colapinto is the first Argentine driver in F1 since 2001. Speaking to the media today, Colapinto said he believes, he proved that he belongs to the premier class of motorsport.
“They showed so much confidence and trust in putting me in a seat,” quote Colapinto Motosport.com.
“It was a very difficult bet, and a bet that many people didn't understand.
“But I hope to be showing what I'm capable of and that I deserve a seat in Formula 1. The idea and the opportunity that James gave me are helping me to show that.
“I am just doing a lot of work to try to learn quick. I have very little mileage in a Formula 1 car, it's only two races and one Free Practice 1 and a few laps in Abu Dhabi last year.
“But I think with the little mileage I've got, to be in the points in my second race is something really positive and very good. So, we have to keep going, but it's a good start.”
Thanks to Colapinto's and Albon’s great results, Williams jumped Alpine in the Constructor’s Championship standings.
“We did a great job with the team,” Colapinto said.
“We moved up Williams in the championship and I'm very happy with the result.
“It's a great result for the team. Both cars in the points, P8 in the Constructor’s Championship, both cars in the top eight. It's something unexpected and amazing for the team, for Williams, they really deserve it."
