McLaren may have missed out on the Driver’s title, but they have the chance to secure the Constructors’ Championship in Qatar, marking their first crown in 16 years.
Despite Lando Norris losing the Drivers’ Championship last weekend in Las Vegas to Max Verstappen, McLaren still has a strong chance to win the Constructors’ Championship.
Heading into the Qatar Grand Prix, McLaren is 24 points ahead of Ferrari, followed by Red Bull 53 points behind and with 103 points still available across the remaining two rounds, McLaren has the upper hand and could seal their first Constructors’ title since 1998 this weekend.
To win the championship in Qatar, McLaren needs to outscore Ferrari by 21 points and Red Bull by 9, which would give them an unbeatable 45-point lead heading into the final race in Abu Dhabi.
However, if McLaren only outscored Ferrari by 20 points, they would enter the final race with 44 points still available. This could lead to a tie, which would then be decided based on the number of wins, second-place finishes, and so on.
McLaren has had a strong showing in Qatar before. In 2023, they scored 47 points, with Oscar Piastri winning the sprint and both drivers finishing on the podium in the main race. Ferrari only managed 13 points that weekend, so McLaren has a real chance to repeat that performance and win the title.
While Ferrari and Red Bull are still in the fight, McLaren has the advantage and is the only one out of the top 3, who can clinch the title already in Qatar. The other two will try to do everything they can to keep the battle alive to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix a week later.
