Former Haas F1 Team Principal Guenther Steiner has criticized Lance Stroll, questioning his role in the sport after another ‘invisible’ year.

Lance Stroll is now in his seventh Formula 1 season and is still seeking his first victory, but based on his current form, that achievement seems unlikely in the near future.

His 2024 season has been pretty disappointing so far, as he sits outside the top ten in the standings. He has only managed to score 24 points, which is significantly lower compared to his teammate Fernando Alonso, who has earned 64 points.

Despite that, he is known for being one of the youngest drivers ever to secure a podium, achieving third place in the 2017 Azerbaijan Grand Prix at just 18 years old.

Stroll’s entry into F1 in 2017 was backed by a successful junior career, winning the 2016 Formula 3 European Championship, but also by his father, Lawrence Stroll, a billionaire businessman, who later brought the financially struggling Force India team his son was racing for.

Although he occasionally shows signs of his past good performance, his results are often hidden by more experienced drivers and teammates.

Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner shares a similar view, criticizing Stroll's lack of presence in races where he struggles, and calling him “non-existent” during those events.

“Lance [Stroll] passes completely under the radar. It’s weird,” he said on the Red Flag podcast.

“You never speak good or bad about him, he’s just non-existent.”

Steiner said that while Stroll is not a bad driver, he doesn't understand why he underperforms and that his motivation can drop depending on how good his car is.

“I don’t think he’s a bad race car driver. I don’t know what it is.

“Obviously, we all know that he doesn’t need to drive a race car. He’s alright [financially], so maybe that’s what it is.

“If the car is not [good enough] to [reach] the podium or something, he’s just like: ‘Yeah, I just get by. Who cares? I wait until next year’s car comes and see if that is better'."

He was especially critical of Stroll's performance in Singapore, saying he seemed invisible.

“I need to go and check the stats because he’s just non-visible,” Steiner stated.

“He was never young, he will never be old. He will just be there. He’s above the rules."

Stroll hasn’t stood on the podium since the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, hoping now for a brighter future with Adrian Newey, who is set to join Aston Martin in March next year.
