News.GP journalist who’s all about the thrilling worlds of MotoGP and Formula 1.Francesco Bagnaia discusses how he plans to bounce back from his 2024 MotoGP title defeat, drawing inspiration from Marc Marquez's recovery after his 2015 loss. Bagnaia believes that learning from his mistakes will make him a stronger contender in the upcoming seasons.
Francesco Bagnaia says he can take inspiration from Marc Marquez's ability to recover after his 2015 MotoGP title loss and go on to win more titles in the upcoming seasons.
Marquez made his debut in MotoGP with Honda in 2013, securing back-to-back titles. However, he couldn't achieve a third consecutive title in 2015, losing too many points due to crashes and retirements.
This setback, however, made Marquez mentally stronger, and he used that newfound resilience to win four more titles, breaking several records along the way.
Now, Bagnaia finds himself in a similar position after 2024, with his streak of two consecutive titles broken by Jorge Martin this season.
Like Marquez, Bagnaia believes that his title defeat will make him an even stronger competitor in the upcoming season.
“I’m still a very young rider, and I think I have another 8-10 years ahead of me,” Bagnaia said. “I’ll push to continue being fast and strong. The key is to increase the number of championships I win, and I’ll give it my all. I don’t see [2024] as a total loss because I’ve learned from my mistakes. We know we lost the title due to those mistakes, and I’ll work to improve on that.”
He also noted, “If you look at Marc’s early career, he won two titles in a row, lost the 2015 championship, and then won four more in a row. So you never know. I’ll give it my best shot and aim for the top again.”
After losing the 2024 title despite winning 11 races, Bagnaia watched Max Verstappen take his fourth consecutive title in Formula 1 just a few days later. Bagnaia admitted that seeing Verstappen's triumph in Las Vegas was difficult, especially after his own defeat.
“The hardest moment in recent weeks was seeing Verstappen win his fourth title,” Bagnaia said. “It was a tough time, but there’s nothing to complain about with Ducati’s season. It was a fantastic year, and we should be proud of it.”
He continued, “I couldn’t help but think that I too could have been a four-time world champion, which brought me back to the pain of the defeat. But I’m viewing this as an opportunity. I know we lost, but I understand why we lost, and that makes all the difference.”
