Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok believes it would be too soon in Franco Colapinto's career to join Red Bull as recent rumours suggest.
Quickly after his debut at the Italian Grand Prix in September, where he was announced as a replacement for Logan Sargeant, Franco Colapinto has made a name for himself in Formula 1.
However, despite his impressive performances, he still doesn’t have a seat for next season as his current spot in Williams has been already filed by the outgoing Ferrari driver Carlos Saiz way before Colapinto’s debut.
Recently, there has been growing speculation about the Argentinian possibly moving to Red Bull, which came after a meeting between Christian Horner, Red Bull's team principal, and Williams boss James Vowles in Brazil.
Therefore, questions have been raised about whether he could be in line for a seat at RB, possibly even replacing Sergio Perez on the main Red Bull team.
While Perez still has a contract for next year, Colapinto is one of several drivers being considered for the role, with rumors suggesting Red Bull might be willing to pay Williams $20 million to sign him.
However, former F1 driver Karun Chandhok has warned that moving to Red Bull’s main team might be a risk for Colapinto. He believes it could harm his development, especially considering the pressure that comes with driving for a top team like Red Bull.
Instead, Chandhok suggests that Colapinto would be better suited to join Red Bull's sister team first, where he can continue to develop without as much pressure as next to Max Verstappen.
“He’s clearly very quick, clearly very talented," he said on the Sky Sports F1 podcast.
“I think we’ll all admit, including Williams, that it’s been a bit of a surprise, because his junior formula record didn’t suggest he’s going to be as good as he has been, and maybe he is well suited to an F1 car or the style of driving, but I think it’d be a mistake to put him in a Red Bull.
“I think it’s too early, I think if they were talking about putting him in an RB, I think that’ll be a good, sensible choice and a career progression for him.
“If they put him in a Red Bull alongside Max, it could destroy him, I think it’d be too soon.”
