Williams has decided to replace Logan Sargeant with promising young talent Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the F1 2024 season.

Logan Sargeant was dropped as a Williams driver after 36 races. The British stable will replace him with rookie Franco Colapinto, after Sargeant's disappointing performances and accidents, from the upcoming Italian Grand Prix.

Formula 1 has been really fierce to Logan Sargeant. The American driver has been struggling basically for the entire 1,5 years as he has continuously failed to deliver points, which are crucial for teams like Williams. In total he scored only 1 point in 2023 at the Circuit of the Americas, ending a 30-year wait for an American driver to score points.

This season has been very difficult for him and he made it even more difficult to Williams, because of his inconsistent results and mistakes, which led to accidents. The cup has overflowed last weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, where Sargeant crashed in the third practice session. He jumped out of the car completely uninjured but the FW46 caught on fire and was almost completely destroyed, costing Williams approximately 1.7 million American dollars.

Although, there has been speculation for some time about the replacement of Sargeant, the name of his successor is rather surprising. This week appeared on-line some rumours that Sargeant could be replaced by someone more experienced, such as Liam Lawson or Mick Schumacher.

However, the choice eventually fell on the 21-year-old Argentine, who raced in the Formula 2 series this year (he is sixth in the standings with one win). Last year, the Williams junior finished fourth in the Formula 3 series.

“It is an honour to be making my Formula 1 debut with Williams – this is what dreams are made of. The team has such amazing history and a mission to get back to the front which I can’t wait to be part of. Coming into F1 mid-season will be an enormous learning curve but I am up for the challenge, and I’m fully focused on working as hard as I can with Alex and the team to make it a success,” said Colapinto after promotion to the race seat.

“To replace a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season. We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximise every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle. We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and Franco is getting a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate what he is capable of across the final nine rounds of the season," said Williams Racing Team Principal James Vowles.

Williams now puts lots of hopes in Colapinto and their second driver Albon, to improve their Constructor's Championship position in the upcoming races, before Carlos Sainz steps in next year.
